Calling to participation in the EU Counter Summit
Action-Thessaloniki 2003, Greece
As you know the European Union (EU), with Greek
presidency since January, is going to hold its summit in
Thessaloniki, Greece, from 20-22 June 2003.
Our member organization in Greece, KNE (Communist Youth
of Greece), among with other expressions of popular
movements, students organizations and trade unions has
organized different activities in the framework of
“Action-Thessaloniki 2003”. There have been a lot of
initiatives, conferences, protest mobilizations and
demonstrations, struggling against the imperialism and
war, NATO, and EU neo-liberal policies against the
workers and youth rights. The most important activity of
this action will be the Counter Summit events during the
three days of the EU summit and specially the mass
demonstration in 21 June.
In this framework, KNE is also organizing an
Anti-imperialist Youth Camp, from 18-22 June. In this
camp, besides the participation on the actions of
Counter Summit, the youth organizations will have the
opportunity to discuss, to meet each other and also to
have their own presence and program.
We are planning to have an event promoted by WFDY to
discuss and share our positions and struggles with many
young people that will be there. This event, about the
EU army, will take place on 19 June, in the evening. We
think this is a good chance to straitening the
relationship with the WFDY organizations that will
participate in these actions but also to use the
advantage of this moment to contact other youth
organizations from different countries.
We
call upon the WFDY organizations to participate in the
EU Counter Summit promoted by “Action-Thessaloniki 2003”
with particular prominence for the Anti-imperialist
Youth Camp and for WFDY activities, increasing the
struggle for peace, youth rights, education and
employment.

WFDY
is approaching the results of the 16th
Assembly with optimism towards the future. If the 20th
Century marked the development of humankind with
unprecedented steps towards the liberation of the
peoples, the democracy, human rights and peace, we have
good reasons to believe that the 21st
century, will be the century of the victory of the
peoples, their full liberation from imperialist
domination, exploitation, misery and wars.
Since
the WFDY 15th Assembly, four years ago, the world has
passed through a very complex and critical situation and
witnessed many changes and developments. WFDY was proved
correct in its principle positions and actions against
the imperialist aggressions in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan
and Iraq. Whereas the worldwide imperialist system is
currently more and more dominating international
affairs, financial, political and humanitarian crises
characterize its nature on regional and national level.
Two main trends are confronting each other: on the one
side Imperialism with its policies of interventions and
wars and on the other side the peoples struggling for
peace, national sovereignty, democracy and international
cooperation.
The World Federation of Democratic Youth
reaffirms its orientation adopted by the 15th Assembly
in Cyprus, February 1999 as an international
non-governmental youth organization with progressive
political character and anti-imperialist identity. WFDY
aims to promote unity among progressive, leftist,
anti-imperialist and other youth organizations for
peace, international solidarity, people-based
development and other youth-related issues. Our
Federation, our common family and achievement, is today
stronger and greater, more mature to face the challenges
of the struggle and to fulfill the aspirations and
visions of the youth.
In the “Preamble of the Political Declaration adopted at
the 16th General Assembly of WFDY, March 4-7,
2003, in Havana, Cuba”
No to the European Union Army
The EU is revealing its reactionary nature through its
increasing militarization and new attacks on workers
rights and democratic liberties. The advanced
militarization of the EU with the so called rapid
intervention forces and the European Army which seek to
dominate and interfere in the political reality of the
Balkans, the countries of central and eastern Europe and
as
far as the middle east and central and Latin America, is
yet another particularly alarming development
We
demand and struggle for the dissolution of NATO, the
European Army and for the cancellation of militarism and
of all other forms of imperialist domination at the
expense of peoples and nations.
We struggle for the creation of another Europe, of
solidarity, social justice and equality, a Europe of
peace, in which people will decide freely for their
fortunes, a continent in which the future will not be
decided by the European Union of monopolies and
profiteering.
We hold that the democratic and progressive traditions
of the World Federation of Democratic Youth
strengthen our determination to continue to strive for a
better world in which humankind will fully emancipate
itself. In this collective effort the youth will be the
vanguard, will remain at the forefront, for as long as
it takes, in order to materialize our vision.
