Solidarity with the Chilean youth and salute to JJCC

All throughout the world it is known by everyone the intense struggles of the Chilean students, youth and people developed now and over the last months against the administration of President PiƱera, particularly against the intention of privatizing education.

From WFDY we salute and express our solidarity towards the youth and people of Chile, particularly in this moment in which the government - the most reactionary since Pinochet - is making use of violent forms of repression against the pacific and legitimate actions of struggle, protest and presentation of a viable and fair alternative.

We are sure that the mass struggle and the unity of the are essential conditions for the transformation of the country and from our side we will do everything in our power so that, with our international support, we can contribute to the fulfillment of the goals of all the struggles that are taking place, for a Chile, a Latin America and world of peace, solidarity and revolutionary social transformation!

Furthermore, we salute especially the very important role played by our member organization (the Communist Youth of Chile - JJCC) in the process and wish all the best for the reinforcement of the struggle and of the organization upon the occasion of its 79th anniversary.

On the riots in London and other parts of Britain

WFDY condemns the reckless violence and widespread criminality of recent nights, however we understand it as a direct product of the capitalist system and of the resulting dangerous lack of stability and rights for the youth of today, accompanied by disenfranchisement and exacerbated by unprecedented levels of alienation.

It is clear that the anger of the youth is derived from a number of factors including police brutality, the massive reduction in public spending on youth and other services, and a general frustration at a future with little prospects. Furthermore, WFDY notes that the cuts in public spending have had a disproportionate impact on both the youth and ethnic minority groups.
The first and main responsible for the wave of violence that now is taking place is the system under which the British people live, responsible for massive unemployment, huge rates of precarity, extremely expensive access to the higher levels of education and almost impossible access to proper housing, mainly for the young generations. It is also important to remind that it is this system that engages the British youth in wars just to satisfy the greed for profit of the big national and international monopolies.

We admit these concerns along with our member organizations in Britain, especially with comrades of YCL Britain, demanding to address the root causes of unrest and violence and by supporting the genuine concerns of young people in the street and their frustration while outright rejecting their way of vandalizing, looting and creating chaos without certain goal of socio-economic transformation.

In this extremely sensitive moment, WFDY calls upon all the young people in Britain to organize themselves and find the best ways to revolutionarily transform their country, which will surely be through the overthrown of this dominant order and not through the destruction of public or private goods, for a Britain and a world of peace, solidarity and social transformation.

On the occasion of 23rd Anniversary of 8888 Student Uprising in Burma

The World Federation of Democratic Youth would like to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of 8888 people’s uprising and express its solidarity with the struggling people of Burma and with our member organization there for their aspiration of peace, democracy and change.

The history of Burma is full of struggle by the students since its liberation colonialism and there are remarkable movements in last 50 years against military dictatorship. The most historic and notable student movement in Burmese history can be listed as Uly 7th Students movement in 1962, Rangoon University demonstration in 1970, U Thant Demonstration 1974, 7777 Movement 1977, Phone Maw Affair, march 13-18, 1988 and other series of recorded student movements in Burmese History. The struggle against military regime in Burma is the history of student struggle in which they have the inspirational and vanguard role for change. The climax of all the student movement was 8888 people uprising in 8th August 1988 has significant bearing in Burmese Democratic Movement that was started from March 1988 related with Phone Maw Affair.

The 1988 students’ uprising in Burma has brought hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life into the street. The teachers, professionals, doctors, nurses, monks, farmers, workers, civil servant, ethnic minorities came together into street against military regime with sacrifice of thousands of life and sustained injury. The suppression has made more than 1ten thousand students to flee to join arm struggle where as many more to continue struggle from neighboring countries. More than 6000 activists where put into prison. Universities were made close for a long time.

The movement has made to resign the military ruler Ne Win. It has brought the unity among all the forces of Burma; and as a result in the election of 1990, the National League for Democracy led by Daw Aung Sann Suu Kyi had won 80 percent of total seats however military Junta did not recognize it rather put Suu Kyi into house arrest and continued its ruthless suppression against people.

Almost all the struggling figures of Burma including Aung San Suu Kyi are the product of 1988 people’s uprising, and the movement is still pivotal and great inspirational for the success of democratic struggle in Burma. The movement has the international significance as it was closely aspired by the South Korean Students Movement and great uprising against Marcos regime in Philippine.

On this occasion, we reaffirm our commitment to support the struggle of Burmese Youth and Students for democracy and change; we demand the military regime to relinquish all the power and handover it to the people, especially to NLD and its leadership. We welcome the release of Aung San Suu Kyi as it is one step victory of people and demand the immediate release of all political prisoners.

We express our full solidarity with our member organizations namely ABSL and ABFSU for their continue struggle to reinstate democracy in the country.
